Good morning. Our colleague Margot Sanger-Katz explores how Republicans could change Medicaid. We’re also covering tariffs, Syria and literature festivals in India.

Cutting Medicaid?

I cover health care.
Republican leaders in Congress have directed the committee that oversees Medicaid to cut $880 billion from the next budget. They say these cuts aren’t necessarily aimed at Medicaid, the insurance program for 72 million poor and disabled Americans. The cuts could come from Medicare, for instance. But Trump has vowed not to touch that very popular program. And a sum this large can’t come from anywhere else.
The Republican process is just getting started, and we don’t yet know how lawmakers will change the program. Most Medicaid money goes to states, so the best way to think about the proposal is as a cut to state budgets. State lawmakers could react by dropping coverage, raising taxes or slashing other parts of their budget. In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain a few possible scenarios.
(I don't know what impact this will have on the nursing homes in Georgia, but I don't think it will be positive. Borrowing millions of dollars with me 81 years old, expecting the money to repay the loan to come from the state and federal government is not something that makes much sense. Furthermore, none of the banks or lending institutions have been willing to loan me the money. I will keep my options open in case something changes; if not, I will let the option to purchase expire.)
I was up at 6:45 am; Debbie was up and in pain. I got her back to bed and gave her some medicine to ease the pain. We had prayer, and I got dressed and studied scriptures. At 9 am, I cooked breakfast. Debbie takes some of her medicines at 9:00. I had an egg omelet with spinach and canadian bacon, with toast and fruit. Jody got up and had some warm chocolate milk and muffin she made. Shelby got up at 10:30 am. I joked with her that her mother, Jody, took a stick and beat the mattress she was on so it would turn her loose. Beth sent me a copy of the talk she gave in church yesterday. The story of the story Fahrenheit 451 about Montag and Clarisse. She tried it all in with Christ and her children. I called Scott Edwards with Rovin Capital about the tax information for 2024 returns. I called and asked Karlene about Gerald Searle's tax information for our 2024 tax returns. She said he is supposed to get with her today. Jody and Shelby went for a jog. Libby came up about the time her mother and sister got home, and she showered, and got ready for work. Jody and Shelby left, and I went with Debbie for her 6-minute walk. I called and talked to Matthew. He called last night when I was sleeping. When we got home, I took Debbie's blood pressure and blood oxygen. She took her medicine and went to bed. I watched some TV and took a nap on the couch. NOTE: The thought came to me from President Holland's talk about what he was told when leaving the spirit world: "pray always", so I had prayer before taking a nap, pray when I am up, pray driving the car some place, pray before meals, pray when going to bed at night, pray when getting up in the morning, and try and remember to pray before any signific decision. Jody got back; Shelby and Bradley came over. Jody worked sewing clips on Shelby's dress and ironed it. Shelby and Bradley came over after his test at school. Sister Barbar Peck came by and brought dinner for Debbie and me. Later Jody and I went for a short walk with Debbie, the second one of the day. After Debbie and I had eaten, she laid down to rest. Later, we went for an evening walk. Alex and Carter came over and visited. They brought roses and candy for Debbie. We had a good visit and prayer with them before they left. Debbie and I waited for Jody to get home before going to bed.
