Note: Two books written by C.S. “Jack” Lewis. He died 7 days short of his 65th birthday from prostate cancer on the same day as President John F. Kennedy and Aldous Huxley.
"The Problem of Pain", written in 1940 by C. S. Lewis, argues that human pain is not sufficient reason to reject belief in a good and powerful God.
"A Grief Observed" by C.S. Lewis is a deeply personal and profoundly moving memoir about loss, faith, and the grieving process. Written in the aftermath of his wife Joy Davidman's death from cancer in 1960, this brief but powerful book offers an unflinchingly honest account of Lewis's struggle with overwhelming grief.
C.S. Lewis's book, "Miracles," included a chapter that challenged naturalism, the philosophical belief that only natural laws and forces operate in the universe. This challenge was a focus of a debate with philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe at the *Oxford Socratic Club in 1948. “Suppose I stand on one of those weighting machines that says I speak your weight, and it says to me you weight is 15 stones” (210 pounds). That is true even though it is produced by truly mechanical means. This undercut Lewis’ position. Lewis was obliterated and wounded deeply because Anscombe was a devout Catholic Christian. He thought they should have been working together in the fight against Naturalism and Secularism. While some have suggested this debate led Lewis to abandon apologetics. This may be an oversimplification, yet he never wrote any more Apologetic papers defending Christianity in an effort to make converts as did the Apostle Paul in the New Testament in the Bible.
C.S. Lewis died 7 days short of his 65th birthday from prostate cancer on the same day as President John F. Kennedy and Aldous Huxley died.
*The Oxford Socratic Club was a student club that met from 1942 to 1972 dedicated to providing an open forum for the discussion of the intellectual difficulties connected with religion, and with Christianity in particular
Debbie and I slept in, we had prayer, and I took the garbage and recycling containers to the street to be picked up today by the City of Lehi. I watered the plants and flowers outside for Debbie left at about 10:30 am to drive up to Twin Falls to help Jody get ready for Shelby's and Bradley's wedding and reception next Wednesday, 20th August. I took the Subaru Outback and got an emissions test and registered it with the Utah DMV for another year. I came home, exercised, set ups and push-ups, and studied scriptures. I called Lawn Doctor, who is coming out tomorrow, and asked them to check and spray for the weeds again, and the grass they dug up is coming back. Jody called this morning, and she and Debbie are still talking. I took our ballots for the primary city election and put them in the drop box, I went to the Legacy Center, but it is closed from today to the 16th for cleaning and repairs. I came home and got on the vibrating machine wide open for 20 minutes, the maximum amount of time allowed. I sent an email to the Argentina TucumánMission, 2246910@churchofjesuschrist.org. I asked them for an address to send a Christmas package to Elder Baylen Johnson. I called and talked to Dan Truitt. He is meeting Susan, his daughter, at Ora's grave. Tomorrow will be the date of her death, August 12, 2023. I tried calling some others, but no answer. My couisn, Roy Bryant, called me back; Max Kimball called and told me that Dan Guinn has declered bankruptcy; an old frined, Mike Coultas, called; Rae Lynn called and is sending an Uber to pick me up and take me to Michael's in Salt Lake City. Gaving is coming up and opening his mission call at 8:30 pm. It was after 10 pm before he arrived and opened his call. Michael had it transferred from his iPhone to the TV, and all the family was included from California to Idaho, and could see and talk to Ethan. He read his mission call from his phone. He has been called to serve in the Peru Trujillo North Mission. He goes into the MTC on January 28, 2026. Michael said he would send oom invention links to me and Debbie and to Mirko, Ljubica, and Bojana in Serbia to visit. Carter arranged for several of Alex's friends to come, and Ethan brought a friend. Michael reserved the roof and party area at the Liberty Sky building for the activity. Ethan and his friend came from playing golf today in Heber and took me back home. I rode up in an Uber that Rae Lynn arranged. I brought the garbage container and the recycling container from the street back to our house. I texted Debbie a little before midnight, but she had already gone to sleep. I had prayer and went to bed about 1:00 am.
